Fire doors are critical for ensuring safety in buildings by preventing the spread of fire and smoke. Proper installation is essential to maintain their effectiveness. Follow these instructions carefully to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations.
2. Tools and Materials Required
- Fire door and frame
- Screws and fixings (fire-rated)
- Intumescent seals and smoke seals
- Spirit level
- Screwdriver or drill
- Measuring tape
- Chisel (if necessary)
- Hinges (fire-rated)
- Door closer (if required)
- Fire-rated door handles and locks
3. Pre-Installation Checks
- Verify that the fire door and frame are certified and meet local fire safety regulations.
- Ensure the door opening is square, level, and properly sized for the door.
- Check that all components (hinges, seals, etc.) are fire-rated and compatible with the door.
4. Installation Steps
Step 1: Prepare the Door Frame
- Position the door frame in the opening and ensure it is level and plumb.
- Secure the frame using fire-rated screws or fixings. Ensure the frame is firmly fixed to the wall structure.
Step 2: Install Intumescent Seals
- Cut the intumescent seals to the correct length and fit them into the grooves on the door frame or door edge.
- Ensure the seals are continuous around the door frame and free from gaps.
Step 3: Hang the Door
- Attach fire-rated hinges to the door and frame. Use the recommended number of hinges (usually 3 for standard doors).
- Hang the door on the frame and check for smooth operation. Adjust the hinges if necessary to ensure the door closes properly.
Step 4: Install Smoke Seals (if required)
- Fit smoke seals around the door edges to prevent smoke leakage. Ensure they are properly aligned and do not obstruct door movement.
Step 5: Install Door Hardware
- Attach fire-rated door handles, locks, and other hardware according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Ensure all hardware is securely fitted and does not compromise the fire door’s integrity.
Step 6: Install Door Closer (if required)
- Fit the door closer to ensure the door self-closes and latches properly. Adjust the closer to meet the required closing speed.
5. Post-Installation Checks
- Verify that the door closes smoothly and latches securely without sticking.
- Check that the gaps around the door are within the specified limits (usually 3-4mm on the sides and top, and 8-10mm at the bottom).
- Ensure all seals are intact and properly fitted.
6. Maintenance and Inspection
- Regularly inspect the fire door for damage or wear.
- Test the door’s operation and ensure it closes properly.
- Replace any damaged components (seals, hinges, etc.) immediately.
7. Compliance and Certification
- Ensure the installation complies with local fire safety regulations and standards.
- Retain all certification documents for the fire door and components.
